We will leave around 08.00 Hrs. from Madrid, crossing mountain areas of the North of Madrid, then lands of Castile and entry into the Basque Country. Arrival to VITORIA-GASTEIZ, the capital of the Basque Country. With our guide we will walk through this city known for its active historic center, its gardens and its vibrant cultural scene.
We continue to BILBAO. First we go to the Old Town, the medieval core, for a stroll by the lively neighborhood alongside the estuary with their traditional taverns in the “Seven Streets”. We recommend the “La Ribera” market for lunch, it offers food stalls in a boat-like structure located in front of the river and with “pintxos” bars, the jewel of the Basque gastronomy.
After lunch, we will walk with our guide along the banks of the estuary, until we reach the Guggenheim Museum, with its striking exterior architecture (the entrance is not included, if you wish to enter our guide you may help you to book the tickets). Subsequently, in PORTUGALETE, visit with entrance included to the Vizcaya Bridge, declared a World Heritage Site of UNESCO, inaugurated in 1893 with the aim of uniting the two banks of the estuary, it is famous for being the world´s first ferry bridge for pedestrians and vehicles alike.
Return to Bilbao and free time.
We visit GUERNIKA, known for being the place where one of the worst massacres of the Spanish Civil War was fought, and is remembered in the iconic painting by Pablo Picasso. In this locality you will find the tree of Guernica, under which branches the Basque Country was granted autonomy in the Middle Ages. There are two museums (entrance included), the first the Peace Museum, located in the “Plaza de los Fueros” near the Town Hall, an interactive photographic and audio-visual exhibition that shows the testimony of the survivors of the aforementioned massacre. The second, the Museum of Euskal Herria, dedicated to the history and culture of the Basque Country.
We continue towards HONDARRIBIA (Fuenterrabía), with its beaches, its walls, its sea-life atmosphere and its historic centre, where we are surprised by its grid layout of its narrow and cobbled streets. Time for lunch in the historic city center.
Continuation to SAN SEBASTIAN, where on arrival go up Mount Igueldo to enjoy the beautiful panoramic views over the bay. In the city, we stroll by the historical city center and the beach of La Concha and free time.
NOTE: If you already visited San Sebastian previously or you’d rather visit somewhere else, by talking with your guide the program can be modified to visit Bayonne and Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque-French side.
Following the Way of Saint James in its Navarrese sector we arrive at ESTELLA in the fifteenth century it was known as "Estella the beautiful" and today it continues to honor this adage: Romanesque city that treasures palaces, stately homes, churches, convents, bridges and beautiful buildings that have earned it the nickname of "the Toledo of the north". It surprises us with its lively commercial activity, the taste for music and theater and its impressive gastronomy. Time for lunch. Close to OLITE, the small town with its impressive Royal Palace (entrance and visit included), former court of the kings of Navarre, built on a fortress on the thirteenth century, which in turn was erected on Roman architectural remains. One of the most impressive fortress-cities in Spain.
