Today, we’ll explore Mexico City and the remarkable site of Teotihuacan, located just 40 km from the capital. After breakfast, we’ll begin our journey at the Plaza of the Three Cultures, where past and present merge seamlessly. From there, we’ll continue to the impressive archaeological site of Teotihuacan, where we’ll visit the monumental Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, the Temple of Quetzalpapalotl, the Citadel, and the Avenue of the Dead. We’ll also stop by a local artisan center. On our way back to the city, we’ll visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of Latin America. After returning to the hotel, the rest of the day will be free.
We’ll provide a transfer to the airport for your included flight to Tuxtla Gutiérrez. We should get there in just under two hours. Upon arrival, a guide will be waiting to take us to Sumidero Canyon, where we’ll embark on a boat ride of just over an hour to marvel at this spectacular natural wonder. The river here reaches depths of more than 250 meters, while towering cliffs over 1,000 meters high rise dramatically around us as we pass through the gorge.
We’ll then continue to San Cristóbal de las Casas. The rest of the afternoon will be free to explore this enchanting city in Chiapas, celebrated as one of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial cities. Here, most of the population is of pre-Columbian descent, preserving traditional crafts, language, and culture.
After breakfast, we’ll set off with a local tour operator to explore the indigenous communities around San Cristóbal de las Casas. Our first stop will be San Juan Chamula, home to the unique Church of San Juan, located in the center of the plaza where locals trade their agricultural products and livestock. Here, a local guide from the community will introduce us to the distinctive customs and traditions deeply rooted in this area.
Next, we’ll head to San Lorenzo Zinacantán, where we’ll visit the workshop of a family of artisans. We’ll have the opportunity to observe their traditional waist loom weaving techniques, as well as learn more about their culture and customs.
Afterward, we’ll take a city tour of San Cristóbal de las Casas, including visits to the Temple of Santo Domingo, the Church of La Caridad, the Artisan Market, the Jade Museum, and the Amber Museum. There will also be time for shopping and lunch.
Today, we’ll embark on an 8-hour excursion with a local tour operator. From San Cristóbal de las Casas, we’ll visit Las Grutas del Mamut, named due to its rock formation resembling a prehistoric mammoth. This massive cave is filled with impressive rock formations that captivate visitors.
We’ll then continue to El Arcotete Ecotourism Park, a scenic site surrounded by lush, varied vegetation and abundant wildlife. Here, a striking natural stone archway, shaped over thousands of years by the flow of the Fogótico River, awaits us. This unique formation combines elements of a natural arch and caves, with numerous caverns, rock formations, and stalactites to explore.
Our final stop will be the Rancho Nuevo Ecotourism Park, home to a cave stretching 10.2 kilometers in length and reaching depths of up to 550 meters. An illuminated pathway extends 750 meters into the cave, allowing us to admire the fascinating shapes formed by stalactites and stalagmites over time. This geological marvel is nestled in a conifer forest, where you can also enjoy horseback riding, camping, hiking, and spelunking activities.
We’ll return to San Cristóbal de las Casas where you’ll have free time.
