We continue to JUNO BEACH, where the Canadians landed to later join the British in the offensive. We will visit the Juno Beach Center (entrance included). After that we travel to CAEN, known for its rich history, its castle built by William the Conqueror in the eleventh century and its Abbey of Men, a Gothic church built in the eleventh century. It is a vibrant city with a lively student life and a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shops. With our guide we walk through the center. We will visit the Memorial Museum of Caen, it is a Peace Museum that recreates history from 1918 to the present day (entrance included).
We continue to LILLE, capital of northern France that was formerly an important trade center of Flanders, there are still many Flemish influences. The old town, Vieux Lille, is characterized by brick houses of the seventeenth century, cobbled pedestrian streets and the large main square. During World War II the Stock Exchange Palace was used as the headquarters of the Gestapo, visitors can see the commemorative plaque that recalls its sad history. The Memorial of Resistance, Deportation and Liberation, a monument on the Place de la République, commemorates members of the French Resistance as well as citizens who were deported or executed during the Nazi occupation of the city.
